about

Over the last 7 years of working on The Space Cadet project, I’ve created a lot of music for different settings; art galleries, music festivals, immersive art experiences, back yards, sound systems, headphones and audio installations. My cat has been sleeping nearby or sitting in my lap for the vast majority of the journey and is a constant source of joy and inspiration. On this album I set out to make songs that felt personal to me, comforting, that I would want to put on and listen to at home while reading or having a friend over for tea. Something full of memories, smiles and inside jokes. Here is a bit about each track:

Boopy: This is a word my wife came up with which aptly describes the laid-back, cozy and comfortable feeling I was trying to capture with this record. This song is a recording of me playing a Kalimba through a bunch of effects and then banging on a few random things at the end.

Dusty Library: What would we do without books and libraries? I wanted to capture the feelings of awe and excitement as one sails through an incredible journey from the comfort of an easy chair.

Palace Made of Grass: This track was inspired by two artists from my childhood: The whimsical tales of Odds Bodkins and the ethereal string stylings of Tom Shinness. I tried to blend acoustic instrumentation and electronic sound effects to create something that feels both old and new, evoking a world of fantasy. This song is about the sort of adventure I imagine my cat having in her dreams.

Garden of Special Things to Do: This track went through many iterations, I had to strip away a lot of ideas to get down to the essence. It features samples of a relative who passed away recently. I found it from an old video tape of them walking in a garden with a friend and talking about the flowers, from the 1980s. The title is a play on a Captain Beefheart song title.

Rainy Evening Slumber: I made this on a rainy summer evening instead of taking a nap, it was made quickly as soon the inspiration struck, appearing mostly full formed from the ether.

Void Foam: This song was originally intended to be ambient but my friend Hoopla sent me some excellent drum breaks and this one fit the tune perfectly. I like having something slightly more upbeat here after the soporific effects of the previous track.

Happiness of the Heart: This track was created in part by sampling and editing the locked grooves provided at the end of Four Tet’s Sixteen Oceans vinyl release. It also features a vocal sample sung by an online acquaintance from India.

9 Lives: This is meant to sound like what I think being my cat would sound like. It features a sample of her meowing and purring. I like the way my focus shifts from sound to sound as the song evolves.

Fog On The Beach: This track is inspired by a surreal experience my wife and I had on a foggy day at the beach. It features a recording of the waves and our footsteps crunching on the sand.
